Fat Biking in Maine's Lakes and Mountains
For those that love mountain biking in the woods of Maine March and April are the perfect months to hit the trail on a fat bike. Well-suited for the packed snow trails used by snowmobilers, fat biking (some call it snow biking) has exploded in popularity across Maine's Lakes and Mountains. The huge, knobby-grippy tires keep you on track, offering a perfect alternative to other sports when trails ice up or turn a bit soft—bad skiing conditions make for the best fat biking. Plus, with its recent popularity spike here in Maine’s Lakes and Mountains you won’t need to bring your own ride; we’ve got several shops and ski centers that rent around the region.
A couple quick pointers if you are planning to go. Softer snow is OK but keep it in the track on a slushy day. Look for a well-groomed trail system. You’ll find a great ride at Pineland in New Gloucester while the Carrabassett Valley is just thick with options, or check out the list below for an options that suits your style.
