Sledding - Snowtubing

Regardless of age or level of athleticism, sledding and snowtubing are thrilling wintertime activities. Many areas within Maine’s Lakes and Mountains offer an opportunity to go careening down either a steep mountainside or tame hill, ideal for a sunny, snow-filled afternoon of fun.

Many of the region’s ski mountains and resorts have parks solely dedicated to these classic cold-weather activities. At Sunday River in Newry, anyone over five years old and 36 inches tall can experience the thrill of snowtubing down Sundance Trail on the resort’s South Ridge. Sugarloaf Ski and Golf Resort offers snowtubing for kids 12-and-under three nights a week, and not to be outdone by the mountain resorts is Seacoast Adventure in Windham with 12 lanes of snowtubing open for day and night tubing.

Most snowtubing parks offer tubes for rent, and have tows or lifts to haul you back to the top. But there are also plenty of local hills that, if you grab your own sled and a thermos of hot chocolate, you can hike up yourself and make a wonderful day of old-fashioned, outdoor family fun out of it for free, whether you’re an outdoor adventurer, snow lover, or simply looking to get outside and enjoy the season.
