The Maine’s Lakes and Mountains is home to a collection of the quirky and unique. These sites and roadside attractions give our region personality and are unique to Maine. We think each is worth a trip all on its own.
Adventure from the far reaches of space (well, from a place that has curated the world’s foremost collection of extraterrestrial rocks) to a lovely tour of Maine’s largest lake aboard a vintage riverboat and on to the charming town of Lisbon Falls, the adopted home of Moxie—Maine’s official soft drink (it even has a summertime festival all its own). Now that’s unique… and a little bit quirky too.
Maine Mineral and Gem Museum
The museum showcases Maine’s geological history and renowned mineral and rock collections while providing its visitors with educational opportunities and facilities for conducting research. A popular attraction for visitors, MMGM houses the finest collection of Maine minerals and gems, including the famous Perham Collection and one of the world’s foremost collections of extraterrestrial rocks—meteorites from Mars, the Moon, and the Asteroid Belt.
Stanley Museum
The Stanley Museum preserves the Stanley family’s heritage, including Francis Edgar Stanley and Freelan Oscar Stanley automakers, nephew Carlton Stanley, violin-maker, sister Chansonetta, photographer of rural turn-of-the-century American life, and her daughter Dorothy, a painter.
The museum has assembled a collection of all the different inventions and works of the Stanley family.
Songo River Queen II
Hop aboard a privately built replica of the famed Mississippi River Paddle Wheelers and enjoy a scheduled boat trip on Long Lake. All cruises offer views of the Causeway, the former site of the Bay of Naples Inn, Mt. Washington, Birch Point, Long Island, Arrowhead Point and Arrowhead Lodge, Camp Takajo, Pine Island, and Pleasant Mountain, as well as beautiful waterfront properties ranging from modest camps to multi-million dollar homes. She has two deck levels, a food court, cocktail bar, and restroom facilities.
Bridgton Twin Drive-In
One of the last five classic drive-in theaters in Maine, Bridgton Twin Drive-In shows first run and classic films from Thursday to Sunday during the Summer. Most nights, customers can enjoy a double feature and goodies from the snack stand.
Tabers Mini Golf
The restaurant, mini golf course, driving range, and ice cream stand are a social mecca for locals and visitors during the summer months. With picnic tables and beautiful views of Lake Auburn, Tabers is a great place to spend an afternoon or evening. They take miniature golf seriously here, with weekly Glow Golf and tournaments. Plus, the onion rings are dipped in a homemade batter recipe passed down in the Taber family and are not to be skipped.
Moxie and the Worumbo Mill
Home to the Moxie Festival, Lisbon Falls celebrates Peace, Love, and Moxie—the classic Maine drink—each summer. As the first bottled carbonated beverage made in America, Moxie’s flavor has been distinctively different since 1884.
Like many riverside towns in Maine, Lisbon Falls, a village of Lisbon, is home to a collection of old mill buildings; the Worumbo Mill was featured in Stephen King’s novel 11/22/63, which paints a vivid picture of the mill town that once was. Stephen King was a graduate of Lisbon Falls High School in 1966. The surrounding area inspired locations in many of his stories: Carrie, Graveyard Shift, The Body (Stand by Me), and Salem’s Lot—to name a few.
World's Largest Telephone
Taking the form of an old-fashioned candlestick phone, the World’s Largest Telephone stands 14 feet tall and pays homage to the fact that Bryant Pond was the last town in the U.S. to give up their hand-cranked telephones. The sculpture is at the corner of Railroad St. and Main St., across from the Post Office.
Paul Bunyan and his Ox
A mighty fiberglass statue of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox welcomes visitors to Rumford, providing a great “selfie” opportunity to remember your time by. Stop into the Information Center to see Paul, the Edmund Muskie Memorial, and iron Indian statues. Babe, the Blue Ox, grazes nearby to Paul.
Presidents Sign Post
Located in the small town of Casco, this sign lists places in Maine named the same as presidents, from Washington and Jefferson to Van Buren and Garfield Plantation, with Clinton at the bottom. The sign is only visible when driving southbound on Route 121, just past the town square.
